坂牛研で葛飾区の川の研究をしていたウィーン工科大のアリアナから帰国してウィーン工科大に提出した修士論文が届けられた。量より質が大事とはいえ、日本の修論は言葉が貧弱。英語3万語（日本語6万字）図版60ページ。グラフィックデザインもよくできている。日本の学生、見習わないと。Ariana from the Vienna University of Technology was researching rivers in Katsushika Ward at the Sakaushi Lab, has returned to Vienna and submitted her master's thesis to Vienna University of Technology. While quality is more important than quantity, Japanese master's theses tend to be poorly written. It's 30,000 words in English (60,000 characters in Japanese) and 60 pages of illustrations. The graphic design is also excellent. Japanese students should learn from the thesis.

去年チリに行く頃着工した小さなオフィスの現場。大工さんが沢山入ってくれてオンスケジュール。ありがとうございます。1階は玄関倉庫でRC 。2階はオフィスで心柱を建て、3階まで伸ばす。3階は小部屋が集まるが、梁上はガラス張りにして屋根下空間を大きく見せる。When I visited Chile last year, construction began on a small office site. Many carpenters are working on schedule. Thank you very much. The first floor is a reinforced concrete structure with an entrance hall and storage space. The second floor is an office, with a central pillar extending to the third floor. The third floor is crowded with small rooms, but the space under the roof appears larger by using glass above the beams.

カナダ🇨🇦ラバル大学のルイス教授とズーム。９月にラバルに行き1週間教え、2027年、ブエノスアイレス大と共同ワークショップを計画しようということになる。彼は今イタリア🇮🇹のサルジニア島でユネスコの仕事をしている。気持ち良さそう。I had a Zoom call with Professor Luis from Université Laval in Canada🇨🇦. I am going to Laval in September to teach for a week, and then we're planning a joint workshop with the University of Buenos Aires in 2027. He's currently working for UNESCO in Sardinia, Italy🇮🇹. It looks like a great experience.

篠原先生の本の第二校を戻して私がやるべきことはあと少しで終わる。そこに中公新書の世界建築史の赤原稿が半分届き、2月半ばにもう半分送るとメールが来た。こちらを待っててくれたかのような絶妙なタイミングである。「しかし息をつく暇がない」とぼやくと配偶者に「なんでそんなしょっちゅう本書いているの？一緒に住んでいる私も今何が売られているのか分からないのだから、一般の人はまして分からないはず」というようなことを言われた。うーん書きたいことがあるうちは書くのである。なくなったらやめる。設計だって設計するものがあるうちは設計する。同じような原理である。 I've returned the second draft of the book about an architect Shinohara and my work is almost done. Then I received half the red manuscript for the Chuko Shinsho World Architectural History, and an email saying that the other half would be sent in mid-February. The timing was perfect, as if they had been waiting for me. "But I don't have time to catch my breath," I complained to my spouse, who replied something like, "Why are you writing books so often? Even I, who live with you, don't know which book of mine is being on the bookstore these days, so it's safe to say the average person doesn't know." Well, as long as there's something I want to write, I'll keep writing. When there's nothing left, I'll stop. Even in design, as long as there's something to design, I'll design. It's a similar principle.

近代美術館に行った帰りにYasuda Atelierを覗くと安田さんがいたのでコーヒーをご馳走になった。1時になって来られたToToの方が信州大学の教え子だった。De regreso del Museo de Arte Moderno, pasé por el estudio de Yasuda y me encontré con él. Me invitó a un café. El Sr. Matoba, de Tote Co., Ltd., que llegó a la 1 p. m., era un antiguo alumno mío de la Universidad de Shinshu.

年末地下の整理して出てきた書がとてもよい。備前とあうなあ。

チリ滞在中に知り合ったFさんのパートナーやその父たちと3日間いっしょにチロエを旅行した。その間私が設計した福祉施設の話などをしたら、産婦人科の医者である父は興味深そうに聞いていた。 私が帰国後彼は大学病院の主任教授になり、薬物中毒の親を持つ児童施設を作りたいと考え、私に設計を手伝って欲しいと連絡をしてきた。チリではまだそうした施設を丁寧に作ることが一般化していないのだろうと想像する。 先日日本に来たチリ人に私の設計したリサイクル工場を見せたら、こんな建物は初めて見たと言って驚いていた。社会を良い方向に後押しするこうした施設に対する意識は日本の方が少しだけ高いようである。でもそういう施設を手がける建築家がたくさんいるわけでもない。僕は偶然こんな仕事に巡り合っただけだが、ありがたいと思っている。 でもこういう施設だからこそ徹底していいデザインを作り出さなければいけないのである。単にそうした施設が存在すればいいというわけではない。そこに住む者、働く者が誇れる、良いデザインが必要なのである。お金もないし、補助金をもらったりするから「最低限の」という言葉がつきやすい。でそれだとやっぱりそうした施設は社会の落ちこぼれを拾い集め、社会のゴミをかき集める器なのだと思われることになってしまう。それではダメなのである。 I spent three days traveling to Chiloe with Mr. F's partner and his father, whom I met while in Chile. During that time, I told him about a welfare facility I designed, and his father, an obstetrician and gynecologist, listened with interest. After I returned to Japan, he became a　chief professor at a university hospital and wanted to build a children's facility for parents with drug addictions. He contacted me to ask for my help with the design. I imagine that carefully constructing such facilities is not yet common in Chile. The other day, I showed a Chilean visiting Japan a recycling factory I designed, and they were surprised, saying it was the first time they had seen a building like it. It seems that Japan is slightly more aware of these facilities, which contribute to society's positive direction. However, there are not many architects working on such facilities. I came across this job by chance, but I am grateful. But it is precisely for facilities like these that we must create a thorough and good design. It's not enough simply for such facilities to exist. We need good design that the people who live and work there can be proud of. Because they don't have the money and they receive subsidies, it's easy to use the word "minimal." But that makes it seem like these facilities are just a place to pick up the dropouts and scrape together society's trash. That's no good.わ

篠原一男モノグラフに100年記念館の私のスケッチを小さく載せる。しかしゲラを見たら白黒なので赤黒のスケッチは真っ黒になっていた。ファイルをひっくり返したら線画ができたので差し替える。当時敷地候補は二つあった。一つは現在立っているところ。もう一つは高い建物が建たない敷地でこのスケッチはそちらの敷地のための水平的な案である。I included a small sketch of my 100th Anniversary Memorial Hall in the Shinohara Kazuo Monograph. However, when I looked at the galley proofs, they were in black and white, so the red and black sketch had turned completely black. I flipped the file over and found the line drawing, so I replaced it. At the time, there were two possible sites. One was where the building currently stands. The other was a site where no tall buildings could be built, and this sketch is a horizontal proposal for that site.

コロナの頃甲府で工事をしていた子供施設（オフィス、クリニック、ホール）の写真がやっと撮りおわった。木造で大きな空間を作り中央にトップライトを設けている。ホールはCLT折板構造の屋根である。クリニックは在来工法だ柱梁と構造用合板を同じ面で収める仕上げにして中央に一歩の鉄の柱を立てている。オフィスは周囲の開口部に柱を並べて屋根を支えている。 I've finally finished taking photos of a children's facility (office, clinic, hall) that was under construction in Kofu around the time of the COVID−19. It's a large wooden space with a skylight in the center. A hall has CLT folded-plate roofs. A clinic is constructed using traditional methods, with the columns and beams and structural plywood fitted flush with each other, and a single steel pillar in the center. The office roof is supported by pillars lined up around the openings.
