サンチアゴは100歩歩けば薬屋がある。ジャンとご飯食べた後一緒に薬屋きてもらって薬を買う。チリは処方箋がないと買えないような薬も売っている。でも高い。En Santiago, hay una farmacia a solo 100 pasos. Después de cenar con Jean, le pedí que me acompañara a la farmacia a comprar unos medicamentos. En Chile, venden medicamentos que no se pueden comprar sin receta. Pero son caros.

日本通のジャンに、こっち来て初めて日本食屋に連れてきてもらった。カツ丼1500円。90%日本の味。Jean, que es un gran amante de Japón, me llevó a un restaurante japonés por primera vez desde que llegué. Katsudon (un tazón de chuleta de cerdo) 1500 yenes. 90 % de sabor japonés.

学生のレポート30人分を図書館で読む。日本語にすると1500字くらいのレポートなので30人分は結構きつい。でも半分読んだ。特別素晴らしいというレポートはないけれど平均的レベルが高い。そこに排水管が直ったと大家さんからメール。古い建物だからこういうことはよく起こるのですいませんと謝られた。いえいえ無事直してくれてありがとう。次に移民局から嬉しいお知らせ。居住許可。やったー。この図書館はセシリア・プーガたちが設計したもの。上部は大学の中庭。横から外光が入るように設計されていて快適である。「そろそろ閉めますよと係の人が来たオチョ・ベインテ」。帰って残りのレポート読むかな。I read 30 student reports in the library. Translated into Japanese, each report is about 1,500 characters long, so 30 reports is quite a challenge. But I managed to read half of them. None of the reports were particularly outstanding, but their average were all pretty high. Then I got an email from the landlord saying the drainpipe had been fixed. They apologized, saying it was an old building and things like this happen all the time. No, no, thank you for fixing it. Next, I got some good news from the immigration office: a residence permit. Yay! This library was designed by Cecilia Puga and others. Above is the university courtyard. It's designed to let in natural light from the side, making it very comfortable. "Ocho veinte," the attendant ame to say, "We're closing soon." I'll probably read the rest of the reports when I get home.

週末まとめ買い。これで約11000円。ワインは日本で買うと1本2000円くらいのものがこちらで1000円。Compré mucha comida el fin de semana. Todo lo que compré me costó unos 11.000 yenes. Una botella de vino costaría unos 2.000 yenes en Japón, pero aquí solo cuesta 1.000 yenes.

その昔コーネル大学の優秀な日系アメリカ人学生に本を書いたら英訳するように散々言われた。それから博士論文要約の英訳を作ったり、作品集を全部英語で作ったり、スペインからモノグラフ出したりしてきた。彼に言わせれば日本語しか載っていない本は日本以外には存在しないと同じだと。 チリで僕が使わせていただいている国際的な建築家であるペドロ・アロンソの部屋には日本建築の本が本当に一冊もない。ここの図書館は建築専門図書館で世界中の名著が揃っているが日本建築に関してはJAのバックナンバが揃っているだけである。彼らが日本建築に興味がないわけではない。英語で書いた本がほとんどないからなのだ。スタジオで学生に日本建築の寸法体系（畳）の英語の本を教えてくれと言われて調べても見つからないのには寂しいものがある（誰か知っていたら教えてください）。この間のトークショーの反応でも日本建築を知る人は少ないことがよくわかった。伊東豊雄さえ知らない学生はわんさかいる。篠原、槙の世代に至っては誰も知らない。A long time ago, a brilliant Japanese-American student at Cornell University repeatedly told me to translate any book I wrote into English. Since then, I've translated my doctoral dissertation abstract into English, written a collection of my works entirely in English, and published a monograph in Spain. According to him, a book written entirely in Japanese is essentially nonexistent outside of Japan. In Pedro Alonso's room in Chile, where I'm staying, there isn't a single book on Japanese architecture. The library there specializes in architecture and has a collection of world-renowned works, but when it comes to Japanese architecture, it only has the back issues of the JA. It's not that they're not interested in Japanese architecture; it's simply because there are so few books written in English. It's disappointing when a student in my studio asks me for an English book on the Japanese architectural measurement system (tatami mats), and I can't find one (please let me know if anyone knows). The reactions at a recent talk show also made it clear that few people know about Japanese architecture. Many students haven't even heard of Toyo Ito. As for the generations of Shinohara and Maki, no one knew anything about them.
