その昔コーネル大学の優秀な日系アメリカ人学生に本を書いたら英訳するように散々言われた。それから博士論文要約の英訳を作ったり、作品集を全部英語で作ったり、スペインからモノグラフ出したりしてきた。彼に言わせれば日本語しか載っていない本は日本以外には存在しないと同じだと。 チリで僕が使わせていただいている国際的な建築家であるペドロ・アロンソの部屋には日本建築の本が本当に一冊もない。ここの図書館は建築専門図書館で世界中の名著が揃っているが日本建築に関してはJAのバックナンバが揃っているだけである。彼らが日本建築に興味がないわけではない。英語で書いた本がほとんどないからなのだ。スタジオで学生に日本建築の寸法体系（畳）の英語の本を教えてくれと言われて調べても見つからないのには寂しいものがある（誰か知っていたら教えてください）。この間のトークショーの反応でも日本建築を知る人は少ないことがよくわかった。伊東豊雄さえ知らない学生はわんさかいる。篠原、槙の世代に至っては誰も知らない。A long time ago, a brilliant Japanese-American student at Cornell University repeatedly told me to translate any book I wrote into English. Since then, I've translated my doctoral dissertation abstract into English, written a collection of my works entirely in English, and published a monograph in Spain. According to him, a book written entirely in Japanese is essentially nonexistent outside of Japan. In Pedro Alonso's room in Chile, where I'm staying, there isn't a single book on Japanese architecture. The library there specializes in architecture and has a collection of world-renowned works, but when it comes to Japanese architecture, it only has the back issues of the JA. It's not that they're not interested in Japanese architecture; it's simply because there are so few books written in English. It's disappointing when a student in my studio asks me for an English book on the Japanese architectural measurement system (tatami mats), and I can't find one (please let me know if anyone knows). The reactions at a recent talk show also made it clear that few people know about Japanese architecture. Many students haven't even heard of Toyo Ito. As for the generations of Shinohara and Maki, no one knew anything about them.
