こっちのスタジオで驚くのは、自分のビブリオグラフィーを作る習慣がついていること。彼らは、最初に参考文献リストを欲しいと僕に言ってきたのだ。しかしそれを自分で開拓する能力をつけてくださいと言った。もしできなければリストを作ろうかなと思っていたが、それは杞憂だった。日本の学生は本を読まない、というよりかは、1−２冊の参考書を読んでその分野を知った気になる。こっちの学生は少なくとも一つのテーマに対して２−３週間くらいで10冊くらいの本と関係する論考を多い学生は10−20本くらいは読んでくる。そうやって論文のビブリオグラフィーを作ることが論文を書く最初の作業だということを知っているのである。皆大量の本をバックパックに入れてやって来るのだ。 What surprised me about the studio here was that the students had already developed the habit of creating their own bibliographies. They first asked me for a reference list, but I told them to develop the ability to develop it themselves. I had thought they would make a list. But if they couldn't I was going to make it, but that was an unnecessary worry. Japanese students don't read books, or rather, they feel like they understand a field after reading one or two reference books. Students here read around 10 books and related articles on at least one topic over the course of two or three weeks, with many reading 10-20. This is how they know that creating a bibliography for their thesis is the first step in writing a thesis. Everyone comes to school with a huge number of books in their backpacks.
