The students here took their studio midterm exams the day before yesterday. Four teachers reviewed each student for an hour. Three in the morning and three in the afternoon reviewed six students. All teachers graded them out of 7, with an average less than 4 indicating a failing grade. The grades were announced to everyone in the evening in front of everyone. It was extremely strict. Students found out what place they placed. It is surprising that this was a midterm, not a final, exam. They will use the comments they received here to finish their work next semester. They then take a similar exam in early July, where some students will fail again. They then use the comments from this exam to refine their work over the next two months, spending the final time there. They then take the final exam in September. I was able to see the students' final exams this September, and when they received their passing grades, their faces were beaming with joy. They were surrounded by the congratulations of their friends waiting outside the rooms. At the time, I wondered what they were so happy about. Now that I understand the process, I understand why they feel that way. I sincerely hope that the projects of the students in my studio will grow by next year. After returning to Japan, I will be providing weekly late-night Zoom guidance, which I consider a heavy responsibility.
